DustFall gameplay is one loop: pick a starting payload, destroy your way downward through simulated pixel terrain, survive the surface scan and its hunters, then beat the layer core to drop into the next ruin. Every published mechanic comes from the Steam store description, and the three headline sections there are THE TERRAIN IS YOUR WEAPON, FROM A SINGLE SHOT TO A DISASTER and SIX BURIED RUINS.

The Core Loop in One Pass

The loop is spatial rather than staged. You are always moving away from the surface, and the danger comes from how close you stay to the top rather than from a timer on the screen.

  • Choose a starting payload. The store text gives the Drill Round and the Grenade as examples.
  • Shape a build during the descent through three-way upgrades.
  • Break terrain to open routes, and accept that the same break can collapse the ruin on you.
  • Stay below the surface scan or get detected and pull in hunters.
  • Reach the bottom of the layer, defeat its core, and fall into the next ruin.

EndgameSix layers and six core bosses, three endings, plus Cataclysm Mode

The Terrain Is Your Weapon

The underground is made of pixels that flow, burn, explode and collapse, and the store page names three ways to use that against it. Ignite oil and let fire spread through the terrain. Detonate powder caches to blast a route through solid rock. Remove crucial supports and bring a collapse down on your enemies.

The design intent is stated just as plainly: every tunnel you carve and every cavity you blast open changes the battle and your escape route. The same system is also the game’s main risk. The page warns that every act of destruction may open a path to survival, or bring an entire ruin down on top of you.

Payloads and Three-Way Upgrades

Build variety is framed as combinable parts rather than a fixed class. The feature list describes roguelite builds with freely combinable payloads and upgrades, and the upgrade sentence splits every choice into three directions: enhance your weapon, gain passive abilities, or switch payloads.

Only two payload names are published — the Drill Round and the Grenade — and both appear as examples of starting choices rather than as a complete menu. The store page does not say how many payloads exist, how upgrades are offered, or whether the choices are permanent for the run.

The Surface Scan and the Hunters

The scan is the pacing device. At the start of every descent, the surface scan begins to close in. Stay too close to the upper layers and you will be detected, drawing increasingly dangerous hunters. Dig beyond the scan’s reach to earn a brief moment of safety.

That reads as a spatial pressure gradient: the top of a layer is dangerous, the bottom is a temporary refuge, and hunter threat escalates the longer you linger upward. What is not published is equally clear — the page names no hunter types, gives no detection radius and does not explain what a successful catch does.

Six Layers, Six Cores and Three Endings

The descent is divided into six buried ruins. Each of the six layers has its own terrain materials, environmental reactions, enemy ecosystem and core boss, so the material you are digging through changes layer by layer, and so does what lives in it.

Clearing a layer is defined by its core: only by reaching the bottom of a layer and defeating its core can you fall into the next ruin. The endgame line in the feature list names three endings, plus Cataclysm Mode after the ending. The campaign framing is deliberately open-ended — the page asks whether there is really a home beneath the earth — but it does not spell out how any ending is reached.

What Is Not Documented

The store page describes systems, not tables. Anything numeric beyond the layer and boss counts is absent.

  • No weapon, payload or upgrade list, and no upgrade numbers.
  • No layer names, layer order or map for any of the six ruins.
  • No enemy names, boss names, or boss attack descriptions.
  • No completion time, difficulty tiers or run length.
  • No rules for how a run ends in failure beyond the hunters, and no meta-progression details.

FAQ

  1. How does DustFall play?

As a single-player descent roguelite shooter: you carve through destructible pixel terrain, trigger fires and collapses, and push deeper each run.

  2. What can you do to the terrain?

The store text lists three examples: ignite oil so fire spreads, detonate powder caches to blast through solid rock, and remove crucial supports to cause a collapse.

  3. What are the upgrade options during a descent?

Three-way upgrades: enhance your weapon, gain passive abilities, or switch payloads.

  4. How does the surface scan work?

It closes in at the start of every descent; staying near the upper layers gets you detected and draws increasingly dangerous hunters, while digging below its reach buys a brief safe window.

  5. How do you move to the next layer?

You must reach the bottom of a layer and defeat its core; only then do you fall into the next ruin.

  6. How many layers and bosses are there?

The store text says six layers, each with its own terrain materials, environmental reactions, enemy ecosystem and core boss.

  7. How many endings does DustFall have?

The feature list names three endings, plus a Cataclysm Mode after the ending.
